Polymer engineering

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Polymer engineering is a special field of science. Engineers in this field design and study polymer materials. They also find ways to change how these materials work. This work covers many areas like the petrochemical industry. It also looks at how polymers are built and how they act. Engineers study the structure of these materials to see how they behave. This helps them create new things for many different uses.

There are three main ways these materials work. First are thermoplastics, which are plastics that soften when heated. They become hard again when they cool down. This can happen over and over again. Many daily items like nylon and PET are thermoplastics. Second are elastomers, which are stretchy materials like rubber. They can change shape when you pull them. Then they quickly return to their original size.

The third type is called thermosets. These materials start as a liquid during manufacturing. They go through a curing process to become hard. Once they are cured, they cannot be melted again. They are often used in composite materials. These are made by adding stiff fibers like fiberglass. This makes them very strong but also very light. They are great for parts that face a lot of stress.

Humans have used polymers for a very long time. In 1839, Charles Goodyear made a big discovery. He worked on rubber vulcanization to make natural rubber useful. Later, in 1907, L. Baekeland reported a new type of resin. This was the first synthetic plastic product. In 1920, H. Standinger helped explain how polymers work. He said they are long-chain molecules held by bonds. This discovery helped start modern polymer science.

We see polymers in almost everything around us. High-density polyethylene is used for pipes and bottles. Polypropylene is used for medical tools and packaging. Some polymers are even used to make airplanes. The B-2 Spirit stealth bomber was the first all-composite aircraft. In medicine, doctors use biodegradable polymers. These are special because they break down inside the body. This means they do not need to be removed later.
