technology Maturity 13-18 Next article →

The chemical industry is a huge part of our modern world. It includes many companies that make useful substances. These organizations take raw materials and turn them into new things. They use oil, natural gas, air, water, metals, and minerals.

These materials become commodity chemicals. These are used to make many products for homes and factories. This industry helps everything from building houses to growing food.

There are many different ways these chemicals are made. One way is through petrochemicals, which come from oil or gas. These are used to make polymers. Polymers are materials like plastics and synthetic fibers.

Another way is making inorganic chemicals, like acids. Some chemicals are made for farming, such as fertilizers and pesticides. The industry also makes life sciences, which include medicines and vitamins.

This industry grew very fast during the Industrial Revolution. In 1736, Joshua Ward found a way to make sulfuric acid. He heated sulfur with saltpeter to create it. Later, in 1749, John Roebuck and Samuel Garbett built a large factory in Scotland.

Charles Tennant later made a famous bleaching powder. He used chlorine and lime to make it. His factory in Glasgow grew from 52 tons to 10,000 tons in just five years. This helped change how people made cloth.

Many important people helped improve how we make chemicals. Ernest Solvay created a better way to make soda ash in 1861. His Solvay process was cleaner than older methods.

In the 1840s, Charles Goodyear and Thomas Hancock worked on rubber. William Henry Perkin discovered the first synthetic dye in London. This dye was a bright purple color.

Later, companies like BASF and Bayer in Germany became very large. They produced many different types of dyes for the world.

You can find products from this industry almost everywhere. Most plastics, like polyethylene, come from this work. Polyethylene is used for milk bottles and packaging films.

You also use PVC for pipes in construction. Even the clothes you wear might use synthetic fibers. The industry is worth nearly 5 trillion dollars globally. It is a massive part of how the world works every day.
