Petroleum is a liquid found deep inside rock formations. It is made of a mix of hydrocarbons and organic compounds. Most scientists believe oil forms from tiny sea life called plankton. These tiny creatures died hundreds of millions of years ago. Their remains sank into mud and silt on the ocean floor. Over a long time, heat and pressure turned them into oil reservoirs.

The petroleum industry is the world's largest industry by dollar value. It works in three main stages called upstream, midstream, and downstream. Upstream is the first part where people find and extract crude oil. Midstream is the middle part used for moving and storing the oil. Downstream is the final part where oil is turned into products.

These products include gasoline, fuel oil, and even plastics. It is also used to make medicines and fertilizers.

Humans have used unrefined oil for over 5,000 years. Early people used it to keep fires burning or in war. In the 1800s, people used whale oil for light. Later, they used coal and wood for heat. Everything changed when people learned to make kerosene from crude oil. This made petroleum a very valuable thing to trade.

Many famous discoveries helped the industry grow. In 1853, Samuel Kier started a refinery in Pittsburgh. In 1859, Edwin Drake drilled a famous well in Pennsylvania. Canada also had an early discovery in 1858 at Oil Springs. In 1878, Ludvig Nobel launched the first oil tanker. By the 1920s, many countries like Sweden and Peru had oil fields.

Today, the world uses a huge amount of oil every year. The world consumes about 36 billion barrels of oil annually. Different parts of the world use different amounts of energy. For example, the Middle East uses 53% oil for energy. North America uses about 40% for its needs. We can see oil being pulled from the ocean too.

Large platforms work far out at sea to find it.
