Most perfumes are liquids made of fragrant essential oils. They also use solvents and fixatives to help the scent last. These mixtures can come from natural sources or artificial chemicals. People use them to make the world around them smell agreeable.

Different types of perfume have different strengths. This strength depends on how much aromatic oil is inside.

Parfum has the most oil, between 15% and 30%. Eau de parfum has about 15% to 20% oil. Eau de toilette is lighter, with 5% to 15% oil. Eau de cologne is even lighter, with only 2% to 3% oil.
