There are two main ways to use incense. The first way is called direct-burning incense.

You light this type directly with a flame. Once the flame is blown out, a glowing ember stays lit. This ember smoulders and slowly releases a fragrant smoke. It can come in many shapes, like a cone or a coil.

Coils are shaped like a long spiral and can burn for many hours or even days. Another type is called indirect-burning incense. This type cannot burn on its own. It needs a separate heat source, like glowing charcoal, to release its scent.

Making incense involves mixing fragrant plant materials with other things.

Many makers use essential oils or ground-up plants. For direct-burning incense, a binder is needed to hold everything together. This binder might be a natural gum or a powder made from tree bark. In some cases, makers use charcoal and a special powder to help it burn evenly. This allows the incense to mark time as it burns down. Some people even make a paste by mixing powder with honey or dried fruit.

Humans have used incense for thousands of years.

Some of the earliest incense burners were found in Sudan from the A-Group culture. These date back to around 3300 to 3000 BCE. In Ancient Egypt, people used incense to make rooms smell better. They also used it in religious ways to please their gods. In China, people used herbs like sandalwood and cinnamon for ceremonies during the Zhou dynasty.
