People use it to make perfumes and incense for religious ceremonies. The name comes from Old French, which means "high-quality incense."

This resin comes from trees in the Boswellia family. There are many different types of these trees. Some names include Boswellia sacra and Boswellia papyrifera. People value this resin for its many uses in traditions. It can be burned to create beautiful smoke or turned into oils.

Getting the resin is a careful job that takes time.

First, the Boswellia trees must grow for eight to ten years. Then, workers tap the trees two or three times every year. They make small cuts in the bark to let the resin flow out. This resin eventually hardens into lumps. The best quality resin comes from the final taps of the year. These "tears" have a higher amount of aromatic compounds. Workers then hand-sort the resin to find the very best pieces.

Frankincense has a very long and famous history.

People have traded it on the Arabian Peninsula for over 5,000 years. The Greek historian Herodotus wrote about harvesting it in southern Arabia. He even said winged snakes guarded the trees! In the past, traders moved the resin on elephants to ports. From there, ships carried it to far places like China. The resin was also a gift from the Magi to Jesus in the Bible.

Today, most of the world's frankincense comes from the Horn of Africa.

This includes places like Somalia and Ethiopia. Specifically, much of it comes from the border between Somalia and Ethiopia. In Oman, the trees grow north of Salalah. Some of these ancient trading sites are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites. However, the trees are facing some hard jobs right now. Populations are declining because of overexploitation and habitat loss. Some trees are also lost to farming or beetle attacks.

Many different cultures use frankincense in their daily lives.

In Persian medicine, it has been used for stomach issues. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is used to help with blood circulation. Some people use the oil to cleanse a building of bad energy. People also use it in a censer, which is a tool for burning incense. A traditional version used in the Horn of Africa is called a dabqaad. Whether used in a temple or a home, this resin connects people to ancient traditions.
