A chemical reactor is an enclosed space where a chemical reaction takes place.

In the field of chemical engineering, these are called process vessels. They are used to carry out specific unit operations. Engineers design these tools to be very efficient. They want to get the highest yield of a product. This means making as much as possible with the least amount of money. They must also manage costs for raw materials and labor.

How a reactor works depends on its specific design. Some reactions are exothermic, which means they give off heat. Other reactions are endothermic, which means they absorb heat. To manage this, engineers use heating or cooling systems. A tank reactor might have a jacket or coils around the outside. These coils wrap around the vessel wall to change the temperature.

Reactors also manage pressure through pumping or agitation. This helps the reaction happen in the right way.

There are several basic types of reactors used today. The simplest kind is the batch reactor. In a batch reactor, materials are loaded in all at once. The reaction happens over a set amount of time. These are often used for small-scale production. You might see them used in brewing or making enzymes.

Some batch reactors are also called pressure reactors.

Another common type is the Continuous Stirred-Tank Reactor, or CSTR. In a CSTR, fluids are constantly introduced into a tank. An impeller, which is a tool that stirs, ensures everything mixes well.

At a steady state, the amount of material flowing in must equal the amount flowing out. This prevents the tank from overflowing or going empty. Sometimes, engineers use many CSTRs in a series to improve efficiency. This allows the first tank to work at a higher rate.

A Plug Flow Reactor, or PFR, is quite different. It often looks like a long pipe or tube. Fluid reagents are pumped through the tube to start the reaction.

As the fluids travel through the pipe, the reaction rate changes. The rate is very high at the start. It slows down as the reagents are used up. Some reactors also use a solid catalyst to help. A catalytic converter in a car is a real-world example of this.
