Chemical reaction engineering

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Chemical reaction engineering is a special way to study how things change. It is a part of chemical engineering and industrial chemistry. This field focuses on using tools called chemical reactors. A reactor is a place where chemicals can mix and change. Sometimes these reactors use a catalyst to help the change happen. A catalyst is a substance that helps a reaction work.

Sometimes the reactor is part of a bigger system. It might be in a fuel cell or a special vessel. This work is very important for making new things. It helps us make better ways to create what we need.

Engineers want to find the best way to design these reactors. They look at many different things to make them work well. They study how heat moves from one place to another. They also study how liquids and gases flow through the system. This is called mass transfer, which is how things move. They look at reaction kinetics, or how fast a change happens. They also look at how the mix of ingredients affects the result.

By studying these parts, they can make the best possible design.

This field began to grow in the early 1950s. It started with researchers at the University of Delft. Other researchers at the Shell Amsterdam research center helped too. A man named J.C. Vlugter likely created the name for the field. He used the name while preparing for a big meeting. This meeting was the 1st European Symposium on Chemical Reaction Engineering. It was held in Amsterdam in 1957.

Experts meet every two years at special meetings called ISCRE. These three-day conferences move around the world. They visit North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. These meetings happen on a six-year cycle. The ISCRE Board also gives out two big awards. The Neal R. Amundson Award honors leaders in the field. It started in 1996 and gives a $5000 check.

The Rutherford Aris Award honors young researchers under age 40.

This work started with making oil and fuel products. Now, it is used to improve many different technologies. It helps us build new processes for all kinds of things. You can see this science in many everyday items. It is used in the tools that make our fuel. It is used in the surfaces that help create energy.

Reaction engineering helps turn raw materials into useful things for everyone.
