Chemical reaction engineering

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Chemical reaction engineering is a special way to study changes. It helps people design the best tools for these changes. These tools are called reactors. A reactor is a place where chemicals mix and change.

Engineers look at many things to make reactors work well. They study how heat moves. They study how liquids or gases flow. They also look at how fast changes happen. This is called reaction kinetics. This term means the study of how fast things change.

This field started in the early 1950s. Researchers at Shell Amsterdam and the University of Delft helped start it. A man named J.C. Vlugter used the name for the field. He used it for a big meeting in 1957.

Experts meet every two years at ISCRE meetings. These are big three-day talks. They happen in North America, Europe, and Asia. People share new ideas there. They also give out awards. The Neal R. Amundson Award goes to great leaders. The Rutherford Aris Award goes to young workers. These awards help honor people who do great work.
