A chemical reactor is a closed space. It is a place where chemical reactions happen. This is a way to change materials into new things.

Engineers design these tools to be very efficient. They want to make the most product for the least cost. They must also control heat and pressure. Some reactions are exothermic, which means they give off heat. Others are endothermic, which means they take in heat.

There are different types of reactors. A batch reactor is the simplest kind. You load materials in, and the reaction happens over time. These are often used for small jobs, like making enzymes.

Another type is the CSTR. This stands for continuous stirred-tank reactor. In a CSTR, materials flow in and out at the same time. A tool called an impeller stirs the liquid to keep it mixed.

Lastly, there are plug flow reactors. These look like long pipes or tubes. The materials move through the tube like a plug. The reaction happens as the fluids travel along the pipe.
