A chemical plant is a place that makes new materials.

These plants change materials using special steps. The starting material is called a feedstock.

The plant turns this feedstock into a final product.

Plants use many parts to do this work. Large vessels or units hold the materials. Pipes carry liquids and gases between these units. Some units are chemical reactors. These are places where chemical changes happen.

There are two main ways to run a plant. The first way is called batch operation. In a batch, a group of material is added to a unit. The process happens, and then the product is removed. This is good for making small amounts of things like medicine.

The second way is continuous operation. In this way, all steps happen at the same time. Materials flow in and out in a steady stream. This is very efficient for large jobs like oil refineries.

Engineers use special tools to design these plants. They often build a small pilot plant first. This helps them learn before they build a big one.
