Chemical process

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A chemical process is a way to change things. It can happen on its own. An outside force can also cause the change. This change is called a chemical reaction.

Engineers use these ways to make goods. They do this on a very large scale. They use big plants to do this work. These plants use special tools to change materials.

One way is to use unit operations. These are single steps in a larger set of steps. Each step happens in a special part of the plant. We call these parts units.

Some steps mix things together. Other steps separate things. These steps can happen one after another in time. They can also happen in different places along a stream.

Scientists can use math to track the materials. They look at what goes in and what comes out. This is called a material balance. This helps them know how much they will make.

These processes help make many things. They are used to make food and medicine. They also help clean water. They even help make oil and gas.
