Chemical process

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A chemical process is a method used to change chemicals or chemical compounds. In a scientific sense, these changes can happen on their own. An outside force can also trigger a chemical reaction. However, engineers use the term in a more specific way. They define a chemical process as a method for manufacturing on an industrial scale. This involves changing the composition of materials using specialized technology. Such technology is similar to what you find in chemical plants.

In engineering, these processes often involve many different steps. These steps are known as unit operations. Each unit operation usually takes place within a specific section of a plant. These sections are called units, and they can be large individual vessels. A process might involve a chemical reaction to change a substance. It might also use methods like mixing or separation to change the material. These steps can follow a sequence in time. They can also move through a sequence in space along a flowing stream.

Engineers must carefully track all materials entering and leaving a system. The starting material is known as the feed, or the input. The finished material is called the product, or the output. Engineers use material balance calculations to determine expected amounts at key steps. They rely on empirical data to make these important calculations. This mathematical approach allows them to scale the process. They can scale the amounts up or down to fit a specific plant capacity. One single process might be used in many different plants at different sizes.

To visualize these complex systems, engineers use specific types of diagrams. A block flow diagram is a simple way to show a process. In these diagrams, units are represented as simple blocks. Connecting lines with arrowheads show the direction of the material flow. For more complex work, they use a process flow diagram. This provides a much higher level of detail for the viewer. These diagrams help workers understand how the feed becomes the product.

Some chemical processes have very ancient origins. Methods like distillation and crystallization go back to the era of alchemy. This practice was famously found in Alexandria, Egypt. While the technology has changed, the core ideas remain. Today, unit processing is the fundamental principle of chemical engineering. It is the main driver for many different chemical industries. Each type of unit processing follows specific chemical laws. Similarly, unit operations follow established physical laws.

There are many specific types of unit processing used in industry. Some examples include fractionation, which separates mixtures into parts. Other processes include distillation, filtration, and oxidation. Engineers also use reduction, hydrogenation, and dehydrogenation. More complex chemical changes include hydrolysis, hydration, and dehydration. Other types involve halogenation, nitrification, and sulfonation. Even more specialized tasks like amination, alkylation, and esterification are part of this field.

Chemical processes are not limited to just making pure chemicals. The same technology and equipment are used in many other sectors. Oil refining and natural gas processing rely on these methods. Polymer and pharmaceutical manufacturing also use similar chemical processes. You can find these techniques in food processing as well. Even the way we treat water and wastewater involves these principles. These processes are essential to many parts of modern life and industry.
