Biochemical engineering is a way to use living things to make goods.

It uses tiny living things or small organic molecules. These molecules are often called enzymes. Engineers take small ideas from a lab. Then they turn them into big ways to make things for everyone.

This field started a long time ago. Louis Pasteur studied how living things change things through fermentation. This is a way to make new items. In 1928, Alexander Fleming found penicillin. This discovery helped start the field. Engineers now look at microbes in soil, rivers, and forests.

These engineers work in many areas. In medicine, they make vaccines and drugs. They use bioreactors, which are large tanks, to grow cells. In the food industry, they help make and pack food. They use ways like drying or salting to keep food safe. They also work to make food more healthy.
