Nonfood crop

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Most crops are for eating. But some plants have a different job. We call these nonfood crops. Some people also call them industrial crops.

These plants help farmers earn more money. They also help small towns grow. Farmers use them to make goods. These goods can replace things from other lands.

Many kinds of plants work this way. Some are common like wheat. Others are less common like hemp.

We use these plants for many tasks. Some make fiber for cloth or rope. Cotton and flax are good examples. Other plants make paper or padding.

Some crops help us build things. We use hemp and bamboo for this. They can even make paint. Some plants make insulation to keep homes warm.

Plants can also make energy. We call these energy crops. They make biofuels. This includes things like biodiesel.

Some plants are used for medicine. These help people stay well. Even lavender is used for essential oils. Many plants serve a big purpose in our world.
