People grow crops in large amounts. We use them for food and clothes. Some crops even make fuel. We use wheat and rice for food. We use cotton for textiles, which are cloth materials. Some plants have many uses. For example, maize can be food for people. It can also be food for animals. It can even make biofuel.

Farmers use different ways to grow plants. Some grow one type of crop in a field. This is called monoculture. Others grow many different plants together. This helps the soil stay healthy. Some plants are grown just to protect the soil. These are called cover crops. They help stop soil from washing away.

Most of our food comes from a few plants. In 2023, four crops made up half of global production. These were sugar cane, maize, wheat, and rice. Global production has grown a lot lately. This is due to better farming ways. We also use more water for crops now. This helps us grow more food for everyone.
