People who do this work are called agronomists. They study many things to make better food and fuel. One way they help is through plant breeding. This means picking the best plants to make new kinds. They made a grain called triticale. It is a mix of rye and wheat. This new grain has more protein than the others.

Agronomists also use biotechnology. This is work done in a lab to change plant traits. They can change oilseeds to make fuel or soap.

Soil is also a big part of their work. Agronomists check soil for nutrients. These are things like nitrogen and potassium that help plants grow. They also study ways to save the soil. They want to stop soil from washing away in rain. One way is contour plowing. This helps keep the soil and water in place. They also look for ways to keep the land healthy for the future. This helps us have enough food for a long time.
