Soil is made of many parts. It has sand, silt, and clay. The mix of these parts changes how soil works. Some soil holds water well. Other soil lets water drain away fast. Plants need the right amount of water to grow. They also need air. Tiny holes in the soil act like air tanks. These holes let oxygen reach plant roots.

Healthy soil is full of life. Many tiny living things live there. These include bacteria and fungi. These small creatures help make the soil better. Scientists also look at nutrients. Plants need things like nitrogen to stay strong. If the soil is low on nutrients, scientists may use fertilizer.

We must also protect our soil. Wind and rain can wash soil away. This is called erosion. Scientists find ways to stop this. They might use contour plowing to save the dirt. This helps keep our land healthy for a long time.
