Soil texture is the mix of tiny parts in the top layer of earth.

These parts are sand, silt, and clay. The size of these parts changes how soil works. Sand has the largest parts. These are bigger than 0.05 mm. Silt is the middle size. It is between 0.002 mm and 0.05 mm. Clay has the smallest parts. They are less than 0.002 mm. Clay parts are shaped like flat plates.

Knowing the texture helps farmers. It tells them which crops will grow well. It also helps them know if the soil can hold water. Sandy soils have big spaces that let water flow away. Fine soils like clay hold onto water much better.

People use different ways to find the texture. One way is called texture by feel. You can squeeze soil between your fingers to make a ribbon.

A long ribbon means there is a lot of clay. Another way is the hydrometer method. This uses a tool to measure how fast parts sink in water. Sand sinks first. Silt sinks next. Clay stays in the water the longest.
