Soil science is the study of the soil on Earth.

Scientists look at how soil forms and how it works. They study its color, texture, and how it helps plants grow.

There are two main branches of this science. The first is pedology. This is the study of how soil forms and its natural parts. The second is edaphology. This is the study of how soil works with living things. Both branches look at the chemistry and biology of the ground.

In the past, people thought soil was just broken rock. They thought it was a dead thing for plants. But scientists like Vasily Dokuchaev found it is different. He saw that soil is a natural body with its own history. It changes because of water, air, and living things.

Today, scientists use maps to show different soil regions.

These maps help us use the land in the right way. We must protect our soil to grow food for a growing world. We also study how soil can help with climate change.
