Fertile soil provides plants with water and nutrients. It must also be free of toxic substances. These are things that can stop plants from growing.

Most soils have different layers. Scientists call these layers horizons. The top layer is the surface horizon. Below that is the subsoil. Deep down is the substratum.

Different parts of the world have different soil types.

Plants need three main nutrients to stay healthy. These are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Phosphorus is very important for young plants. It helps them grow and divide cells. Some soils lack these nutrients. People often add fertilizer to help. Fertilizer is a way to add more nutrients to the ground.

Sometimes soil loses its quality. This is called soil depletion. It can happen if the land is used too much. When topsoil is lost, crops may not grow well.
