Scientists call this soil health. Healthy soil works well with its environment. It helps plants and animals grow. It also keeps our air and water clean.

Many tiny living things live in the soil. We call these microbes. Some scientists think microbes control 80% of how nutrients move. In some grasslands, there are huge amounts of bacteria and fungi in the soil. These tiny lives make the soil strong.

Farmers can use special ways to help the soil. One way is using cover crops. These plants act like a blanket. They protect the soil from washing away. Another way is called crop rotation. This means planting different things in the same spot each year. This helps the soil stay rich. Some farmers also use no-till farming. This means they do not dig up the soil too much. This keeps the soil parts together. These steps help keep carbon in the ground. This is good for the whole planet.
