Soil science

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Soil science is the study of the soil on the surface of the Earth. It looks at soil as a very important natural resource. Scientists study how soil forms and how it is classified. They also map out where different types of soil are found. This science helps us understand how to manage the land we use.

It is a big job that helps us protect our world.

There are two main ways to study soil. The first branch is called pedology. This is the study of soil in its natural setting. It looks at how soil forms and its chemical makeup. The second branch is called edaphology. This is the study of how soil works with living things, especially plants. Both branches use physics, chemistry, and biology to learn more. They help us see how the ground and life work together.

People have studied soil for a very long time. The earliest known system comes from China in a book called Yu Gong. This book was written in the 5th century BCE. Later, scientists like Friedrich Albert Fallou and Vasily Dokuchaev changed how we think. Fallou was one of the first to study soil origins. Dokuchaev is also a founding father of this science. He showed that soil is a natural body with its own history. It is not just broken rock, but something much more complex.

Today, scientists use special systems to name and group soils. In 1998, the World Reference Base for Soil Resources became the international system. The current version is the 4th edition from 2022. This system is based on how soil looks and forms. Scientists also use maps to show different soil regions across the globe.

These maps show where soil is light or heavy. They also show how soil performs, like if it floods easily.

Soil science connects to many parts of our daily lives. It helps us grow enough food for a growing population. Scientists study how soil can trap carbon to help the climate. They also look at how soil protects different habitats like wetlands. This work is vital for managing water and preventing erosion. Understanding soil helps us be good caretakers of our planet. It links the rocks beneath us to the food on our tables.
