Physical geography is a major branch of science.

It focuses on the natural world around us. This study looks at patterns in the air, water, and land. Scientists call these parts the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and geosphere. It is different from human geography. Human geography looks at the places people build. Technical geography looks at tools for spatial information. These different branches often overlap and work together.

Many special fields help us understand these natural patterns. Geomorphology studies how the Earth's surface gets its shape.

It looks at how land changed in the past and how it changes now. Hydrology is the study of water moving on the land.

This includes water in rivers, lakes, and rocks. Glaciology is the study of ice and ice sheets. This field looks at both large continental ice and smaller alpine glaciers. Climatology looks at weather patterns over a long period of time.

History shows how this science has grown over many years. In the Ancient Age, thinkers like Strabo and Eratosthenes studied locations. During the nineteenth century, Alexander von Humboldt viewed geography as a natural science. In the mid-1750s, Mikhail Lomonosov worked in Siberia. He studied how soil forms and how ice moves. His work helped start the new branch of glaciology. This was a very important time for the study of our world.

There are many specific ways to study the Earth. Biogeography looks at where different species live and why. This field grew from the work of Alfred Russel Wallace. Oceanography studies the oceans and the sea floor. It looks at everything from tiny marine life to huge ocean currents. Soil geography and pedology study how soil is spread across the land. Coastal geography looks at the meeting point between the ocean and the land. Even the last 2.6 million years are studied in Quaternary science.

These studies help us connect many different ideas. For example, environmental geography looks at how humans and nature interact. It brings together geology, weather, and water studies. Geomatics uses tools like maps and remote sensing to gather information. Scientists share what they learn in special journals. Some of these are called Nature or The Professional Geographer. By studying these parts, we learn how our whole planet works together.
