Earth science

Earth science is the study of our amazing planet. It looks at how the physical, chemical, and biological parts of Earth work together. Scientists study four main spheres that connect to each other. These are the lithosphere, which is the rocky surface. There is also the hydrosphere for water and the cryosphere for ice. The atmosphere is the air around us, and the biosphere is all living things.

By studying these spheres, we learn how the whole world functions as one system.

One big part of Earth science is geology. This is the study of the Earth's structure and its rocks. Deep under the crust lies the mantle. This layer is heated by the decay of heavy elements. The mantle is not quite solid and contains magma. This magma moves in a process called convection. This movement pushes the lithospheric plates above it. This movement is known as plate tectonics.

It can create mountains, volcanoes, or even earthquakes.

Scientists have studied these systems for a long time. Atmospheric science began in the late 19th century. People wanted to use meteorology to forecast the weather. Later, in the 20th century, scientists developed atmospheric chemistry. They did this to measure air pollution. In the 1970s, this field grew because of acid rain. People also began studying hydrogeology as a science in the 17th century. Humans have even used groundwater since 3000 BC.

There are many specific facts about our world. The atmosphere is made of 78.0% nitrogen and 20.9% oxygen. It also has 0.92% argon and small amounts of CO2. The lowest layer of air is the troposphere. It holds 75% of the atmosphere's mass. Earth is about 4.5 billion years old. Without a magnetosphere, we might have lost our atmosphere by now. This magnetic shield protects us from the solar wind.

Earth science helps us understand the world around us. You can see geology when you look at layers of rock. You can see hydrology when you watch the water cycle. Even the air you breathe is part of the atmosphere. Scientists use a rule called uniformitarianism to study the past. This means they look at how things work today to understand history. They use computers or visit places like Antarctica to learn more.
