Earth science, also called geoscience, is the study of our planet. It examines the physical, chemical, and biological systems of Earth. This field looks at how different parts of the planet interact. Scientists focus on four main spheres that work together. These are the lithosphere, or the rocky crust, and the hydrosphere, which includes water. The atmosphere is the layer of gases surrounding us. Finally, the biosphere includes all living things.

Geology is a major branch of Earth science. It focuses on the lithosphere, which is Earth's outer shell. Geologists study the structure and substance of rocks. They also investigate the processes that shape the Earth's surface. This includes studying how geothermal energy affects the crust. Geology uses chemistry, physics, and biology to explain these processes. Historical geology helps us interpret how Earth has changed over time.

Earth's interior drives many massive geological changes. Beneath the crust lies the mantle. The mantle is heated by the radioactive decay of heavy elements. It is not a solid mass. Instead, it contains magma in a state of semi-perpetual convection. This convection causes the lithospheric plates to move slowly. This process is called plate tectonics. It is how the Earth resurfaces itself.

Plate tectonics creates different types of boundaries. Divergent boundaries are areas where new crust is created. Convergent boundaries occur where crust is brought back into the Earth. In these areas, subduction happens as parts of the crust are forced down. Transform boundaries are places where plates slide past each other. At these boundaries, no new material is created or destroyed. Earthquakes often happen near convergent boundaries due to this movement. Volcanoes also form when subducted material melts and rises.

Atmospheric science studies the gases surrounding our planet. The atmosphere has five distinct layers. These are the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere. The troposphere is the lowest layer. It contains 75% of the atmosphere's total mass. The air is mostly nitrogen at 78.0%. Oxygen makes up 20.9% of the air. Argon accounts for 0.92%. Small amounts of CO2 and water vapor also exist.

These gases play a vital role in supporting life. Water vapor and CO2 create the greenhouse effect. This process catches and holds energy from the Sun. It keeps the surface warm enough for liquid water. The atmosphere also shields us from cosmic rays. Earth's magnetic field creates a magnetosphere. This shield protects the atmosphere from the solar wind. Without this protection, Earth might have lost its atmosphere long ago.

Hydrology is the study of the hydrosphere. It focuses on how water moves across the planet. This includes the study of oceans, which is called oceanography. Hydrogeology is the study of groundwater. People have used groundwater since 3000 BC. Scientists have studied hydrogeology as a formal science since the 17th century. Glaciology is another branch. It studies the cryosphere, which includes glaciers and ice.

Earth scientists use different methods to find answers. They use observational, experimental, or theoretical approaches. Many rely on a principle called uniformitarianism. This idea states that active processes today explain ancient features. By watching how the Earth works now, we understand its history. Scientists also use computers to analyze complex data. They may visit extreme places like Antarctica to observe these systems. This helps us understand the entire self-contained system of Earth.
