Geophysics is a science that studies the Earth and the space around it.

Geomagnetisme
Geomagnetisme

It looks at how our planet works by using math and careful observations. Scientists in this field study the shape of the Earth and its many invisible forces. They look at gravity, magnetism, and electricity to understand our world. This science helps us learn about the deep inside of the Earth and the air above us. It even helps us study the Moon and other planets in our solar system.

There are many ways geophysicists study the planet. They might measure gravity to find hidden mineral deposits deep underground.

They also study vibrations called seismic waves that travel through the Earth. These waves move when there is an earthquake or a controlled explosion. By watching how these waves bounce or bend, scientists can map the rocks far below.

They also use tools to measure the Earth's magnetic field and its heat. This helps them see how the Earth's layers move and change over time.

People have been interested in these things for a very long time. Geophysics is one of the oldest sciences. In ancient times, people used early magnetic compasses and seismometers. Later, scientists used math to study the tides and the physical properties of Earth. Over the years, books like the 1929 "Lehrbuch der Geophysik" helped organize this knowledge. Today, geophysicists use many high-tech tools to solve modern problems. They help us find energy resources and protect people from natural hazards.

There are many amazing facts about how our planet behaves. The Earth's magnetic field protects us from the solar wind.

Sometimes, the magnetic poles actually switch places during a reversal. This happens at random intervals, often every 440,000 to a million years. Inside the Earth, heat comes from the planet cooling down and from radioactivity.

This heat powers the movement of the plates on the surface. This movement is what causes volcanoes and mountains to form.

Geophysics connects many different things we see every day. You might notice the tides in the ocean caused by the gravity of the Moon. You might see the beautiful auroras in the sky caused by the magnetic field. Even the heat from deep inside the Earth can be used for energy.

By studying these forces, we learn how the Earth stays active. It helps us understand how our planet grew and how it might change in the future.
