Forensic geophysics is a special way to find things hidden underground. It is a branch of forensic science used for legal work. Experts use these tools to search for many different objects. They might look for weapons or metallic barrels buried in the dirt. They also search for human burials or hidden bunkers. This work helps law enforcement find things without digging up large areas. It is a fast way to investigate the subsoil.

This science works by looking for a contrast in the ground. A contrast is a difference in physical properties. The tools find a difference between a target and the soil around it. This difference helps experts find the exact place where something is hidden. They can also see signs of people digging in the dirt. This works for recent holes or much older ones. The tools can find things in the soil or under the water.

Many tools exist to help with these hard jobs. Ground-penetrating radar, or GPR, is a very popular choice. It can see things up to 10 meters deep. The depth depends on the antenna frequency used. Higher frequencies see smaller objects but do not go as deep. GPR works well, but it struggles in clay or salt-rich soil. Other tools like magnetometry can find buried metal objects.

Different tools are used for different places and goals. Electrical resistivity methods work well in clay-rich soil. This is helpful when GPR cannot work. Some methods, like electrical resistivity imaging, are slower but very detailed. Magnetometers can find metal or even fired objects like bricks. Scientists also use sonar to scan the bottoms of lakes or rivers. They even use water-penetrating radar for ponds and near-shore areas.

Researchers study these tools to make them even better. They often use simulated targets to see what works best. For example, they might bury porcine cadavers to monitor them. They also study how seasonal changes affect the ground. These studies happen in the UK, the US, and Latin America. Some experts even look at old graves in graveyards. They want to see how the ground changes as burials get older.
