Petrology is a branch of geology that studies rocks.

Scientists want to know how rocks form. They look at what rocks are made of. They also study the texture of a rock. Texture describes how the parts of a rock look and feel. Petrologists study how rocks are built and how they change. This work helps us understand our whole planet.

There are three main ways to group rocks. Igneous petrology studies rocks like granite or basalt. These rocks form when molten rock or magma cools down. Sedimentary petrology looks at rocks like sandstone or limestone. These rocks come from pieces of other rocks or biological deposits. They are often held together by a fine material. Metamorphic petrology studies rocks like marble or slate. These rocks change because of heat or pressure. The original rock is called a protolith.

Scientists use many tools to study these rocks. They use mineralogy to look at tiny minerals. They use petrography to see microscopic details.

Some people use lithology to describe rocks they can hold in their hands. In the oil industry, workers use mud logging. They examine small rock pieces under a 10x microscope. They also test the pieces chemically. This helps them understand the ground they are drilling through.

Some experts use a special method called experimental petrology. They use machines to create high heat and pressure.

This helps them study rocks from deep inside the Earth. These rocks rarely make it to the surface in good condition. This method also helps us study the Moon. It even helps us learn about other planets. This work helps us understand how the Earth's mantle works.

Petrology connects to many different parts of science. It uses chemistry to study what is inside a rock. It uses geophysics to study the Earth's physical properties.

Ljudmila Dolar Mantuani was a famous professor in Yugoslavia. She was the first female professor of petrography there. Studying rocks is like being a detective. Every stone tells a story about the past. You can find these stories in your own backyard.
