Greenstone belt

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Greenstone belts are long zones of special rock found deep in the Earth's crust. They can be many kilometers long. These belts sit inside very old parts of the Earth called cratons. They are usually tucked between large bodies of granite and gneiss. These belts are very important to scientists. They hold much more information than the rocks around them. This is because they show us how the Earth changed over a long time.

These belts get their name from a green color. This color comes from minerals like chlorite and actinolite. These minerals form through metamorphism. Metamorphism is a way rocks change when they are squeezed or heated. Most of these belts started as volcanic rocks like basalt. Over time, they also gathered sedimentary rocks. These rocks were often formed at ancient ocean centers or island arcs.

Scientists have studied these belts to understand Earth's history. Professor Annhauser from the University of the Witwatersrand did important work. He studied the Barberton greenstone belt in South Africa. He found pillow lavas in these rocks. Pillow lavas form when lava cools very fast in water. He also saw spinifex textures. These textures come from crystals that grow in very fast-cooling environments.

Greenstone belts are also famous for holding valuable metals. You can find gold and silver in many of them. They also contain copper, zinc, and lead. The Barberton belt is very well known because gold was first found there. Many large belts exist all over the world. The Abitibi belt in Canada is one of the largest. You can find them in Australia, Brazil, and even Antarctica.

Learning about these belts helps us understand plate tectonics. This is the way the Earth's outer shell moves. In the very old Archaean time, the plates were not as mature. By the Proterozoic time, the plates were more established. This changed how the rocks and sediments were saved. Now, we can use these belts to see how the world worked billions of years ago. They act like a map of our planet's past.
