Geologic province

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Earth is divided into many special areas. We call these areas geologic provinces. Each province has common geologic traits. These traits might be the same type of rock. A province can be one single thing. It might be a large basin. It can also be a group of related parts. Some provinces sit right next to each other. They might look similar in shape. Still, they are separate because of their history.

Many different things can make a province. Some are called shields. These are very stable areas. They are made of very old rocks. Other areas are called platforms. These have flat layers of rock on top. Some provinces are called orogens. These form big mountain ranges. They happen when the crust folds up. Basins are also common. These are low areas where rock layers sink.

Scientists study how these areas form. Some provinces come from melted rock. We call these large igneous provinces. They have many volcanic rocks. Other areas are called extended crust. This happens when the crust gets thin. This is caused by a stretching strain. Some provinces are called passive margins. There are also rift basins. These are all different ways the Earth changes.

There are many famous examples of these areas. The Canadian Shield is a well-known shield. The East European Platform is a platform. You can find the Laramide Orogeny in mountains. The Illinois Basin is a type of basin. The North Atlantic Igneous Province is very large. The Niger Delta is a petroleum province. It has a lot of oil.

We also use provinces to find useful things. Some people study them to find minerals. Other studies look for fuel. For example, some provinces have coal. The Niger Delta is known for petroleum. This is a type of fuel. Knowing about provinces helps us find resources. It helps us understand our world.
