Amphibolite

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Amphibolite is a special kind of metamorphic rock. Metamorphism is a process where heat and pressure change existing rocks.

This rock is usually dark and very dense. It often has a salt-and-pepper look. This look comes from small black and white flakes.

Most of the rock is made of a mineral called amphibole. This includes minerals like hornblende and actinolite. It also contains plagioclase feldspar. It usually has very little or no quartz.

This rock forms in a specific way. It often starts as a mafic igneous rock like basalt. When basalt undergoes metamorphism, it becomes amphibolite. Scientists use different names based on the starting material. If it starts as an igneous rock, it is called ortho-amphibolite. If it starts as a sedimentary rock, it is called para-amphibolite.

Some rocks like dolomite can also turn into amphibolite. This often happens near granitic masses. The chemistry of the original rock decides what the new rock becomes.

To make this rock, the Earth must be very hot. The temperature must go above 500 °C. The pressure must also be quite high. This specific set of conditions is called the amphibolite facies.

If the rocks get even hotter, they might begin to melt. This usually happens above 650 or 700 °C if water is present. If the rocks stay dry, extra heat might lead to granulite facies. The rock can also change if it is heated or squeezed in different ways. These changes create different textures like gneissic or mylonite.

There are many specific types of these rocks. For example, hornblendite is an igneous rock made mostly of hornblende. Some people call metamorphosed ortho-amphibolite "epidiorite."

In some places, garnet amphibolite is sold as "Nordic Sunset Granite." This specific type reportedly comes from the Murmansk area. You can also find large boulders of this rock moved by glaciers.

Scientists use geochemistry to tell the different types apart. This helps them know exactly where the rock came from.

People have used amphibolite for a long time. In the early Neolithic period, people used it to make tools. Specifically, they made tools called adzes in Central Europe.

Today, we use it for building things. It is a common dimension stone for construction. Builders use it for paving and for facing buildings. This is because the rock is hard and easy to polish. Its dark color and pretty textures make it very attractive for many uses.
