Granulite

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Granulite is a special kind of metamorphic rock. Metamorphic rocks are made when existing rocks change due to heat and pressure. Geologists find these rocks very important. They often act as samples from the deep continental crust. This is the thick part of the Earth's outer shell. Some granulites stay deep in the Earth. Others move to shallower levels after losing pressure.

These rocks form through a way it works called regional metamorphism. This happens deep in the Earth's crust. It requires very high heat. The heat must be at least 700 degrees Celsius. Sometimes it is even higher, reaching 900 to 1150 degrees Celsius. This heat can come from the mantle rising up. This rising heat creates a high thermal gradient. This means the temperature rises quickly as you go deeper.

Many people have studied these rocks over time. The name comes from the Latin word granulum. This means "a little grain." In the past, some people used the name for different rocks. One old way of thinking called them a type of granite. Most geologists today do not use that old meaning. They use the name for the metamorphic rocks we see now. The Saxony region in Germany is a famous place for these rocks.

Granulites have many specific parts. They are made of medium to coarse grains. They often contain minerals like feldspar and quartz. You might also see pyroxene or garnet. Garnets often look like small pink or red spots. These spots can form a pattern in the rock. The rock can also look like it has bands. This is called a gneissose structure. Some granulites are dark and nearly black. These are called trap granulites.

You can think of granulite as a puzzle of minerals. The tiny grains fit together in a close mosaic. Some minerals might be flat like scales. This can make the rock look like it has lines. This is similar to a rock called gneiss. Many of these rocks were once other things. Some started as sediments like sandstones. Others started as volcanic rocks like basalt. Now they are changed by the deep heat of our world.
