Granite is a very important type of rock found deep in the Earth.

It is a hard and tough rock that people have used for building for a long time. You might see it in big buildings or even in curling stones used in sports.

This rock is part of a huge family called granitoids. These are light-colored rocks that have a coarse-grained texture. This means you can see the different mineral pieces with your eyes. Granite is a key part of the continental crust that makes up our land.

This rock forms through a slow process deep underground. It begins as magma, which is hot, melted rock. This magma has a high amount of silica and alkali metal oxides. Because it is trapped underground, the magma cools down very slowly. This slow cooling allows large crystals to grow. As the magma solidifies, the minerals lock together like a puzzle. This creates the grainy look that gives the rock its name.

Scientists have studied how these rocks form for many years. They use different systems to understand where the magma came from. One way is the Chappell and White classification system. This system uses letters to group granites by their source. I-type granites come from igneous rocks, which are rocks formed from cooling magma. S-type granites come from sedimentary rocks, which are rocks made from layers of sand or mud. There are even A-type granites that form over hot spots or where the land is pulling apart.

Granite is made of several specific minerals that give it color. Most granite contains quartz and feldspar, which are often white or light-colored. It also usually has darker minerals like mica or amphibole. These dark bits look like black pepper scattered in the lighter rock.

Depending on the mix, granite can look pink, gray, or white. Scientists use the QAPF classification to name them. They look at the percentages of quartz, alkali feldspar, and plagioclase. For example, true granite must have between 20% and 60% quartz.

Knowing about granite helps us understand the Earth's history. Large masses of granite called batholiths can cover hundreds of square kilometers.

These huge groups of rock are often found near mountain ranges. You can also find granite in smaller shapes called dikes or stocks. Even the way granite looks can tell us if it was formed by heating up the lower crust. By studying these rocks, we learn how the ground beneath our feet was built.
