Gabbro is a dark and heavy rock found deep inside our planet.

It is an intrusive igneous rock. This means it forms from magma that stays underground. Because it stays deep, the magma cools very slowly. This slow cooling creates a phaneritic texture. That is a fancy word for large, visible crystals.

This rock is very important because it makes up much of the Earth's oceanic crust. It is often found at mid-ocean ridges under the sea.

How does this rock form? It starts as hot, liquid magma. As the magma stays trapped deep beneath the surface, it loses heat slowly. This slow process allows minerals to grow into large grains. Gabbro is a mafic rock. This means it is rich in magnesium and iron. It also contains a lot of calcium.

The rock is mostly made of pyroxene and calcium-rich plagioclase. Some types also have small amounts of olivine or hornblende. These minerals give the rock its dark color.

People have been studying these rocks for a long time. The name "gabbro" comes from a small place called Gabbro. This hamlet is near Rosignano Marittimo in Tuscany, Italy.

In the 1760s, the name was used for rocks in the Apennine Mountains. Later, in 1809, a German geologist named Christian Leopold von Buch used the term more strictly. He described rocks that we now call metagabbro. This shows how our understanding of science grows over many years.

Geologists use special tools to group these rocks. They use a chart called a QAPF diagram.

This helps them see how much quartz or feldspar is inside. Gabbro is different from other rocks like diorite or anorthosite. For example, anorthosite has very little mafic mineral content. Gabbro has more than 10% mafic minerals. Some types are even called melagabbros if they have more than 65% mafic minerals. Scientists use these specific numbers to be very precise.

Even though it is a rock, gabbro is very useful to humans. It often holds valuable metals like gold, silver, and copper. It even contains platinum. The Merensky Reef is one of the most important places in the world for platinum.

In the building industry, people sometimes call it "black granite." However, gabbro is actually very hard and difficult to work with. Some people even use a type called indigo gabbro as a pretty semi-precious stone. It has beautiful black and lilac-grey colors.
