Basalt

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Basalt is a dark and heavy volcanic rock. It is one of the most common rocks on our planet. In fact, more than 90% of all volcanic rock on Earth is basalt. This rock is very important for scientists to study. It tells us secrets about what is happening deep inside the Earth. You can find basalt on many other places in space, too. It makes up about 80% of the surface of Venus. You can also find it on the surface of Mars and on the Moon.

This rock forms in a very specific way. It starts as molten lava deep in the Earth's mantle. When this hot rock moves upward, the pressure on it decreases. This change in pressure causes the rock to melt into magma. This process is called decompression melting. The magma then rises to the surface and erupts from a volcano. Because the lava hits the surface, it cools down very quickly. This rapid cooling creates a fine-grained texture. This means the crystals inside are too small to see easily.

People have been studying these rocks for a very long time. The name "basalt" comes from a word meaning "very hard stone." A man named Georgius Agricola used this name in his work in 1546. He thought the rock was the same as another stone described by Pliny the Elder in AD 77. Today, geologists use many tools to name these rocks. They look at how much silica is in the lava. Basalt has between 45% and 52% silica. If it has more than 52%, it is called andesite.

Basalt has many different looks and types. It is usually dark grey or black because of minerals like augite. However, some types called leucobasalts are much lighter in color. The lava is also very runny, which scientists call low viscosity. It flows much like ketchup does. Because it is so runny, it can spread over huge areas. These large areas of lava are called flood basalts. Some of these flows can cover hundreds of thousands of square kilometers.

Sometimes, the rock looks like it is full of holes. These holes are called vesicles. They happen when gas bubbles get trapped in the lava as it hardens. If there are many holes, the rock is called scoria. You might also see basalt in strange shapes. When large masses of lava cool slowly, they can form tall columns. These columns look like giant stone pillars. You can see these amazing shapes at the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland.
