Basalt is a dark, hard rock. It is made from lava. This lava comes from deep inside the Earth. Most volcanic rocks on Earth are basalt.

Basalt forms when lava cools very fast. It stays near the surface of a planet. Because it cools quickly, it has tiny grains. These grains are too small to see easily. This type of rock is called aphanitic.

This lava is thin and runny. It has a low viscosity. Viscosity is how thick a liquid is. Think of ketchup. Basalt lava moves like ketchup. It can spread over very large areas.

Sometimes, gas bubbles get stuck in the lava. When the lava turns to rock, it leaves tiny holes. These holes are called vesicles. If there are many holes, the rock is called scoria.

Basalt is not just on Earth. You can find it on the Moon and Mars. It also covers much of Venus.
