A flood basalt is a type of rock. It forms during giant volcanic eruptions.

These eruptions pour out huge amounts of lava. The lava is very runny. It can flow for hundreds of kilometers. This covers huge areas of land or the ocean floor.

Many scientists think a mantle plume makes this happen. A mantle plume is a column of hot rock. It rises from deep inside the Earth. This heat melts rock to make magma. The magma then moves to the surface.

As the lava cools, it turns into basalt rock. These layers build up to make flat plateaus. Sometimes the land looks like a staircase. In Swedish, the word for staircase is trappa. This is why people call these areas traps.

When the rock cools, it can form columns. These are long, straight shapes with five or six sides. This is called columnar jointing. The rock also gets tiny bubbles. These bubbles are called vesicles. They look like the stem of a clay pipe.
