It is found in the Andes mountain range. This is how it got its name.

This rock is in the middle. It sits between basalt and rhyolite. Basalt has little silica. Rhyolite has much silica. Andesite has a medium amount.

It usually looks grey. It can be light or dark.

Andesite lava is very thick. It is thicker than smooth peanut butter. This thickness makes it hard to flow. Because it is thick, it often erupts with a big pop. This can build tall, steep volcanoes.

How does it form? One way is through fractional crystallization. This is a set of steps where minerals settle out. First, heavy minerals like olivine sink to the bottom. This changes the liquid left behind. The remaining melt becomes andesite.

Another way is magma mixing. This happens when two different types of magma meet. They mix together in a large space. This creates the right mix for andesite.
