Plagioclase is a very common mineral group.

It is found all over the Earth's crust. You can also find it on the Moon. Some studies of Mars suggest it is the most common mineral there, too.

Plagioclase is not just one single mineral. It is a series of minerals. It ranges from albite to anorthite. Albite is a sodium feldspar. Anorthite is a calcium feldspar. These two can mix in any amount. This mix is called a solid solution.

As hot liquid rock cools, plagioclase forms. Calcium-rich anorthite is usually the first to freeze. As the rock gets cooler, the mineral gains more sodium. This can create layers in the crystal. We call these layers compositional zoning.

Some types of plagioclase look special. Labradorite is a type that shows bright colors. This effect is called labradorescence.

Most plagioclase is white or grey. However, some bits may look green or red. The mineral is quite hard. It has a score of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale.
