Feldspar is a large group of minerals. It makes up about 60% of the Earth's crust.

This means it is very common. You can find it in many kinds of rocks.

Feldspars form when hot magma cools down. Some types are called plagioclase. These contain sodium and calcium. Other types are called alkali feldspars. These contain potassium and sodium. There are also types that contain barium.

Feldspar can change when it meets water. This is called weathering. When water hits the mineral, it can turn into clay. This makes the rock look chalky. Because of this, feldspar is not often found in sedimentary rocks.

People use feldspar for many jobs. It is a key part of making glass. In the US, about 66% of it goes to glassmaking. It is also used for ceramics. This includes things like tiles and dishes. Some people even use it in household cleaners. It helps them scrub things. Even the Mars rover found feldspar on Mars!
