Feldspathoid

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some minerals look like feldspar. We call this group feldspathoids. They have a different structure. They also have much less silica. Silica is a part found in many rocks.

Feldspathoids are rare. They are found in unusual igneous rocks. Igneous rocks form from melted material. These minerals are usually not in rocks with quartz. Quartz is a common mineral.

One place is different. The Red Hill Syenite has both. It has feldspathoids and quartz.

People use a short name for these minerals. They call them foids. A rock is a foid if it has many foids. It can have up to 60 percent.

This name helps us sort rocks. For example, some rocks have nepheline. Nepheline is a type of foid. We call these nepheline syenites. Scientists use a system called Streckeisen to name rocks. This system helps them group rocks by their parts.
