Feldspar

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Feldspar is a huge group of minerals that helps build our world. These minerals are very important because they make up about 60% of the Earth's crust. They also make up 41% of the Earth's continental crust by weight.

You can find them in many types of rocks, like igneous and metamorphic rocks. They are even found in some sedimentary rocks. Because they are so common, they are a key part of how our planet is put together. They are often light in color, which is why scientists use the word "felsic" to describe minerals like quartz and feldspar.

These minerals form in a very specific way. They start as hot, liquid magma deep underground. As the magma cools down, the feldspar crystals begin to grow.

The type of feldspar that forms depends on the temperature. Calcium-rich plagioclase is usually the first to crystallize from the cooling magma. As it continues to cool, the mineral becomes more rich in sodium. Finally, K-feldspar is often the last one to form from the magma. This step-by-step cooling is part of something called Bowen's reaction series.

The name feldspar has an interesting history. It comes from the German words for "field" and "flake." This might be because the rocks are often found in fields. In the 1800s, people also used the name because these minerals can appear as "fields" inside other rocks like granite. The name also uses the word "spar." In English, a spar is a mineral that is not cloudy and breaks easily into flat pieces. This helps describe how the crystals look when they break.

There are many different kinds of feldspar with different names. The plagioclase group includes minerals like albite, oligoclase, and labradorite. Labradorite is special because it can show a play of colors. The alkali group includes minerals like orthoclase, sanidine, and microcline. Some feldspars even contain barium instead of potassium.

In 2020, the world produced about 26 million tonnes of feldspar. Large producers include Turkey, which produced 7.6 million tonnes, and India, which produced 5 million tonnes. Italy and China are also top producers.

We use feldspar in many things we see every day. In the United States, about 66% of feldspar is used to make glass. It is also a very important part of ceramics. This includes things like floor tiles, dishes, and even dental porcelain. Some people use it in household cleaners as a mild abrasive to help scrub surfaces.

Even beyond Earth, we have found feldspar in rocks on Mars. The Curiosity rover discovered it there in October 2012. It is a mineral that connects our homes to the rest of the solar system.
