Plagioclase

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Plagioclase is a very important group of minerals. It is the most common mineral group in the Earth's crust.

You can find it in many different types of rocks. It appears in igneous rocks and metamorphic rocks. It is also found in sedimentary rocks as tiny grains. This mineral is even found in the highlands of the Moon. Scientists think it might be the most common mineral on Mars, too.

Plagioclase is not just one single mineral. Instead, it is a continuous solid solution series. This means different minerals can mix together in many ways. It ranges from albite to anorthite. Albite is a sodium feldspar with the formula NaAlSi3O8. Anorthite is a calcium feldspar with the formula CaAl2Si2O8. These two minerals can swap atoms in their crystal structure. Calcium and sodium atoms can take each other's places easily. This happens because they have almost the same size.

Learning about this series took time. A German mineralogist named Johann Friedrich Christian Hessel first showed this in 1826. Later, August Breithaupt introduced the name plagioclase in 1847. The name comes from Greek words meaning "oblique fracture." This refers to how the mineral breaks along certain angles. These cleavage angles meet at about 93 to 94 degrees. Most plagioclase looks white or greyish-white. Some pieces might even look green, yellow, or red.

There are several named members in this series. Each name depends on how much calcium or sodium is inside. For example, Bytownite has 70 to 90 percent anorthite.

Andesine has 30 to 50 percent anorthite.

Oligoclase has 10 to 30 percent anorthite. Finally, albite has only 0 to 10 percent anorthite.

Scientists use these names to help identify rocks.

Plagioclase forms in a special way as magma cools. This is called Bowen's continuous reaction series.

Calcium-rich anorthite is usually the first to crystallize from the heat. As the liquid rock gets cooler, the mineral gains more sodium. This can create layers called compositional zoning. The core might be calcium-rich while the rim is sodium-rich. Some minerals like labradorite show a beautiful color effect. This is called labradorescence.
