Anorthite

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Anorthite is a special kind of mineral. It belongs to a group called plagioclase feldspar. This mineral is known for having a lot of calcium.

Scientists call it a calcium endmember. This means it is one extreme end of a mineral series. The other end is a mineral called albite. Pure anorthite is very rare on Earth. Most of it contains a little bit of sodium. We call a mineral anorthite if it is more than 90 percent calcium. This helps us group similar minerals together.

There is a specific way that scientists measure this mineral. They use a math rule to find the molar percentage. This is often written as An percent. The math looks at the amount of calcium compared to sodium.

This way of measuring works well for rocks on Earth. However, it might change for rocks from the moon. Moon rocks may have other things like iron inside them. These extra parts can change how the mineral looks. Scientists must account for these things to be accurate.

People first described this mineral in 1823. It has two main type localities on Earth. These special places are Monte Somma and Valle di Fassa in Italy.

Anorthite is often found in igneous rocks. These rocks form from hot lava. It can also be in metamorphic rocks. These are rocks that change under heat and pressure. You might find it in corundum deposits too. It is hard to find on the Earth's surface. This is because it breaks down easily when it meets weather.

Anorthite can handle a huge amount of heat. Pure anorthite melts at 1550 degrees Celsius. This is the same as 2822 degrees Fahrenheit.

This mineral is also very important in space. It makes up much of the lunar highlands on the moon. The Apollo 15 mission collected a famous piece called the Genesis Rock. This rock is made of anorthosite. Anorthosite is a rock that is mostly made of anorthite.

Scientists also found it on a comet named Wild 2.

Learning about anorthite helps us understand the solar system. It is found in rare meteorites that fall to Earth. These meteorites contain special inclusions. These are small parts inside the larger rock. These inclusions are rich in calcium and aluminum.

Finding this mineral on a comet is very exciting. It shows us what space is made of. Even a tiny mineral can tell a big story. It connects the rocks under our feet to the moon and stars.
