This mineral is very important to scientists. It acts as an index mineral. An index mineral gives clues about the earth. It helps people know the depth and pressure of rocks. It also shows the heat levels in the past.

This mineral works in a very interesting way. It is a polymorph. This means it has the same parts as other minerals. Its twins are kyanite and sillimanite. Each one forms under different heat and pressure. Andalusite forms under low pressure. It can form in low or high heat.

At high heat, it may turn into sillimanite. Because they need different settings, they are rarely found together. Scientists use them to map the history of a rock.

People have known about this stone for a long time. A man named Delamétherie named it. He thought it came from Andalusia, Spain. He was actually mistaken about the place. The stones really came from El Cardoso de la Sierra. This place is in the Spanish province of Guadalajara.

Another kind, called chiastolite, was known by the sixteenth century. Pilgrims carried these stones as souvenirs. They brought them back from Santiago de Compostela.

There are many different types of andalusite. One type is called viridine. It is green because of manganese. A clear kind comes from Brazil and Sri Lanka. People cut these into gemstones. These stones show red, green, and yellow colors. This happens because of pleochroism. This is when a stone shows different colors from different sides.

Some stones have a dark cross pattern inside. This is caused by carbon or clay.

We find andalusite in many places around the world. It is often found in mica schist rocks. The Glomel mine is in Côtes-d'Armor, France. This mine provides 25% of the world's andalusite. South Africa has the largest known deposits of this mineral.
