Kyanite is a beautiful blue mineral.

It is an aluminum silicate. This means it is made of aluminum and silicon and oxygen. Most kyanite looks patchy blue. It can be pale blue or deep blue. Sometimes it is gray or white. It can even be light green. In Loliondo, Tanzania, it can be orange.

This orange color happens because of manganese inside the mineral. Kyanite is very important to scientists. It helps them understand the history of our Earth.

This mineral forms deep inside the Earth's crust. It grows in rocks with very high pressure. Kyanite is a polymorph. This means it has the same recipe as other minerals. Its partners are called andalusite and sillimanite. They all have the same parts but different shapes. Kyanite is the most stable at high pressure. When rocks feel huge pressure, kyanite forms. Geologists use it as an index mineral. This helps them trace metamorphic zones. These zones show how much pressure a rock felt deep down.

Scientists have studied kyanite for a long time. A man named G. M. Barrow did important work. He studied metamorphic rocks in Scotland. He used kyanite to define special zones. He showed how kyanite zones differ from sillimanite zones. He also looked at the Fanad pluton in Ireland. In that place, the rocks formed at a shallower depth. Because of this, those rocks have andalusite but no kyanite. This shows how pressure changes where minerals grow.

Kyanite has a very special trait called anisotropism. This means its hardness changes depending on the direction. It is very different in two ways. If you scratch it along its long axis, it is soft. A steel needle can scratch it easily. The hardness is only 5.5 in that direction. However, it is much harder across the crystal. In that direction, the hardness is 7. A steel needle cannot scratch it that way. This is a key way to identify the mineral.

People use kyanite for many helpful things. It is a raw material for ceramics. This includes things like porcelain dishware and plumbing. It is also used for electrical insulators. Kyanite is used to make abrasives for polishing. At very high temperatures, it changes into something called mullite. This happens above 1100 °C. Collectors love to find well-shaped crystals.

They can find kyanite in the Appalachian Mountains or in Brazil. It even exists in Manhattan schist from the time of Pangaea.
