Kaolinite

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Kaolinite is a very important clay mineral used in many industries. It is often called kaolin, which is a soft and earthy substance. This mineral is usually white, but it can change colors. If there is iron oxide present, the clay might look pink, orange, or red.

Lower amounts of iron oxide can make it look yellow or light orange. In some places, like Providence Canyon State Park in Georgia, you can see layers of light and dark colors. This clay is a vital raw material for many different jobs around the world.

At a tiny level, kaolinite has a very organized structure. It is made of stacked layers that are very simple compared to other clays. Each layer has two main parts that stick together. One part is a tetrahedral sheet made of silicon and oxygen. The other part is an octahedral sheet made of aluminium, oxygen, and hydroxyl ions.

These two sheets are strongly bonded by shared oxygen atoms. The layers themselves are held together by hydrogen bonds. Because these bonds are tight, water cannot easily get between the layers. This is why kaolinite does not swell up much when it gets wet.

When you add water to the clay, the tiny plates stick together. This makes the clay plastic, which means you can mold it into shapes. The bonds are weak enough to let the plates slip when you work with them. Once the clay dries, the water leaves and the plates bond directly to each other. This makes the dried clay very rigid but also quite fragile.

If you add water again, the clay becomes easy to mold once more.

People have been using this mineral for a very long time. The name "kaolin" comes from reports written in 1712 by François Xavier d'Entrecolles. He was writing about how to make porcelain in a place called Jingdezhen. The name actually comes from a Chinese village called Gaoling, which means "High Ridge."

During the Qing dynasty, the area around that village was the main source of the clay. Later, people added the suffix "-ite" to the name to describe similar minerals found in other places.

Kaolin is found in many different countries all over the Earth. It is mined in places like Australia, Brazil, China, and the United States. In the U.S., much of it comes from a "white gold" belt in central Georgia. One town, Sandersville, is even called the "Kaolin Capital of the World."

In 2021, the world produced about 45 million tonnes of kaolin. This global production had a total market value of about 4.24 billion US dollars.
