Topaz is a beautiful mineral used as a gemstone in jewelry.

It is a silicate mineral made of aluminum, silicon, oxygen, and fluorine. This mineral is one of the hardest things found in nature. It belongs to a group called nesosilicates. Because it is so hard, people sometimes use lower quality topaz as an abrasive. It can also be used to make materials that survive very high heat. Some topaz is even used as a flux to help make steel.

Many colors of topaz exist in the world. In its natural state, topaz is often colorless or clear. Sometimes it looks golden-brown or yellow-orange. These colors happen because of tiny impurities in the stone. People can change the color of topaz using heat or radiation. This can turn the stone deep blue, pink, or purple.

There is also a special kind called mystic topaz. This is a clear stone with a rainbow coating on top.

People have known about topaz for a very long time. The name likely comes from a Greek word for an island in the Red Sea. Ancient people believed topaz could protect travelers from danger. In the Middle Ages, some thought it could help with fevers. People in India believed wearing it over the heart gave intelligence. The name we use today was first applied to this mineral in 1737.

Large crystals from Brazil can weigh hundreds of pounds. In the United States, topaz is found in places like Utah and Texas. Orange topaz is the birthstone for November. It is also the state gem of Utah. Blue topaz is the state gem of Texas. You can find blue topaz in the Llano Uplift in Texas.

It is easy to tell topaz apart from other stones. Topaz is much heavier than a similar stone called citrine. It also feels very smooth and slippery when you touch it. You can even test it by putting it in a special liquid. Quartz will float in the liquid, but topaz will sink.

If you own a topaz gem, you must care for it well. Use warm water and soap to wash it. Do not use steam or loud cleaning tools. These could cause small cracks to form inside the crystal.
