It is actually a type of mineral called corundum. Rubies are very tough and durable stones. On the Mohs scale of hardness, they score a 9.0. Only two other materials are harder: moissanite and diamond.

Because they are so strong, rubies are very popular for jewelry. They are even called one of the traditional cardinal gems. This group includes diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, and amethysts.

The way a ruby gets its color is quite fascinating.

Pure corundum is actually colorless and transparent. The red color happens when chromium is present inside the crystal. A small amount of chromium replaces some of the aluminium atoms. This change causes the stone to absorb certain colors of light. It absorbs violet, yellow, and green light. Because those colors are taken away, only the red light is seen. This process can even help create a ruby laser.

People use specific rules to decide how much a ruby is worth. Experts look at the color, cut, clarity, and carat weight. Color is the most important part of this check. The most valuable shade is often called pigeon blood red. Clarity refers to how clear the stone looks inside. Natural rubies often have tiny, needle-like parts called silk.

These inclusions can actually help experts tell a real ruby from a fake one. Some stones are even heated to make their color look better.

Rubies can be found in many different parts of the world.

For a long time, the Mogok Valley in Myanmar was the main source. Now, Mozambique has become a very productive place for these gems. The Montepuez mine there is one of the most important sites. In 2022, that mine produced about 10 million carats of rubies. Other rubies are found in places like Thailand, Afghanistan, and even Scotland. Some very old rubies come from Greenland. These stones are about 3 billion years old!

You might recognize rubies from things you see in museums or shops. For example, the British Imperial State Crown has a famous stone called the Black Prince's Ruby. Even though it has that name, it is actually a spinel. Rubies are also the traditional birthstone for the month of July. If a stone is red but not quite dark enough, some people call it a pink sapphire. This name depends on where you are in the world. It is interesting to see how one little stone can have so many stories.
